Vietnam Weather Guide 2026: Best Time to Visit Vietnam by Month and Region

Vietnam Weather Guide 2026: Best Time to Visit Vietnam by Month and Region

Vietnam has a long, narrow shape stretching from the mountains of the north to the tropical islands of the south, so there is no single weather pattern across the entire country. Hanoi can be cool and misty while Ho Chi Minh City is hot and sunny, and Central Vietnam may be experiencing heavy rain at exactly the same time. This is the most important thing to understand before planning a Vietnam itinerary.

In general, March to May is one of the best periods for traveling across multiple regions of Vietnam, but every season has destinations that work particularly well. Northern Vietnam has a cooler winter and a hot, humid summer; Central Vietnam has a longer dry season followed by a wetter period toward the end of the year; Southern Vietnam remains warm throughout the year, with a pronounced dry season and afternoon rainfall during the wet season.

Vietnam Weather at a Glance

Region Dry / Better Weather Wetter Period Main Characteristics
Northern Vietnam April–June, September–November June–August Seasonal, hot summer, cool winter
Hanoi April–June, September–December June–August Cool winter, hot humid summer
Sapa April–June, September–November June–August Much cooler, mountain climate
Ha Long Bay April–June, September–November June–August Misty winter, storms in summer
Central Vietnam February–August September–January/February Hot, sunny, then rainy
Hue March–August September–February Late rainy season
Hoi An February–August September–January Hot and sunny, then rain
Da Nang February–July August–December Beach-friendly dry season
Nha Trang January–August September–December Long sunny season
Da Lat November–March April–October Cool highland climate
Southern Vietnam December–April May–November Hot year-round
Ho Chi Minh City December–April May–November Hot, with afternoon rain
Mekong Delta December–April May–November Warm year-round
Phu Quoc October–June July–September Tropical beach climate

These patterns are useful for planning, but they should not be treated as fixed guarantees. Tropical storms, heavy rain and unusual temperature changes can affect individual weeks.

5 Important Things to Know About Vietnam Weather

First, Vietnam is not one climate zone. The weather changes substantially between Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City.

Second, rain does not automatically mean a bad holiday. Southern Vietnam’s wet season, for example, often brings heavy afternoon showers rather than continuous rain all day.

Third, Central Vietnam has a different rainy season from the South. A traveler visiting Hoi An in October may experience very different conditions from someone visiting Ho Chi Minh City at the same time.

Fourth, mountain destinations are cooler than nearby cities. Sapa, Ha Giang and Da Lat can require jackets even when Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is hot.

Fifth, weather should influence your itinerary rather than determine whether you visit Vietnam at all. When one region has poor conditions, another part of the country may have excellent weather. Vietnam Tourism similarly notes that there is generally a suitable destination somewhere in the country throughout the year.

Northern Vietnam Weather

Northern Vietnam has the most noticeable seasonal changes in the country. Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa and Ha Giang can experience cool winters, hot summers, periods of heavy rain and relatively pleasant autumn conditions.

From December to March, northern cities are generally cool to cold, and cloudy or misty conditions are common. In Hanoi, temperatures can occasionally fall to around 10°C during colder periods, while mountain destinations such as Sapa can feel significantly colder.

From April to June, temperatures rise and skies are often clearer. June becomes increasingly hot and humid, and the summer rainy season begins.

From June to August, Northern Vietnam is hot, humid and wetter. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are common, and tropical weather systems can affect outdoor activities and cruises.

From September to November, conditions generally become more comfortable. September can still be warm, while October and November are often particularly pleasant for Hanoi and northern sightseeing.

Hanoi Weather

Hanoi has four relatively recognizable seasons compared with Southern Vietnam.

December–February: cool, sometimes cold, cloudy and occasionally misty. You may need a jacket, especially in the morning and evening.

March–April: mild to warm, with increasing sunshine and humidity.

May–August: hot, humid and rainy. June, July and August can be particularly uncomfortable for visitors who are not accustomed to tropical heat.

September–November: generally one of the best periods for exploring Hanoi, with cooler temperatures and more comfortable sightseeing conditions.

Vietnam Tourism identifies April–June and September–December among the more favorable periods for Hanoi.

Sapa Weather

Sapa has a completely different feel from Hanoi because of its elevation. The town and surrounding mountains can be cool even when the Red River Delta is hot.

December–March is cold, misty and sometimes very cloudy. January can occasionally bring frost or even snow in the highest areas.

April–June is one of the most attractive periods for trekking, with warmer weather and clearer skies.

June–August is warmer, humid and wetter, with thunderstorms possible.

September–November offers cooler temperatures and generally better trekking conditions. Early October is particularly attractive when rice terraces can turn golden before harvest.

For trekking, good weather matters because fog can completely change the mountain views. If photography is your priority, flexibility is useful because the same viewpoint can be clear one hour and covered by cloud the next.

Ha Giang Weather

Ha Giang is also strongly affected by altitude and mountainous terrain. Temperatures can be considerably cooler than Hanoi, particularly at night.

Spring provides pleasant temperatures and flowering landscapes, while summer is warmer and wetter. September and October can be particularly attractive for mountain scenery and rice landscapes, although weather conditions vary across the different valleys and passes.

Winter can be surprisingly cold on a motorbike, particularly when riding early in the morning or crossing high mountain passes. Warm layers, gloves and a proper waterproof jacket are much more useful than travelers often expect.

Ha Long Bay Weather

Ha Long Bay requires particular attention to weather because cruises operate on the water.

December–March: cool, cloudy and often misty.

April–June: warm to hot, generally clearer and sunnier.

June–August: hot, humid and more vulnerable to tropical storms.

September–November: a mix of sunshine and clouds with more comfortable temperatures.

Vietnam Tourism specifically recommends April–June and September–November as favorable periods for visiting Ha Long Bay. Tropical storms can sometimes result in cruise cancellations, so travelers should avoid scheduling an international flight immediately after a cruise.

This is an important practical point: even if the weather in Hanoi is perfectly acceptable, conditions in Ha Long Bay can be different because you are traveling on open water.

Central Vietnam Weather

Central Vietnam has its own weather pattern and should not simply be treated as an extension of Northern or Southern Vietnam.

Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An generally have a longer sunny period during the first and middle parts of the year, followed by wetter conditions toward the end of the year.

February–August is generally the more favorable period for Hoi An and much of the Central Coast. September–January can bring heavier rain, storms and occasional flooding, particularly around Hoi An and Hue.

This makes Central Vietnam especially important when planning a multi-region trip. A traveler visiting Vietnam in November may find Hanoi pleasant while Hoi An is experiencing heavy rain.

Hue Weather

Hue has a relatively long wet season compared with some other Central Vietnamese destinations.

March–August: warm to hot, generally sunnier and better for sightseeing.

September–February: cooler, wetter and cloudier, with the possibility of heavy rain and flooding.

September through November deserves particular caution because heavy rainfall can affect travel plans and sightseeing. Vietnam Tourism identifies flooding as an occasional issue during the late rainy period.

For historical sightseeing, March through May is particularly comfortable because temperatures are generally more manageable than during the peak summer heat.

Hoi An Weather

Hoi An has a clear difference between its sunny and rainy periods.

February–August: warm to hot, generally sunny and suitable for exploring the Ancient Town and beaches.

September–January: wetter and cooler, with storms and occasional flooding.

March is especially attractive because temperatures are comfortable and the countryside around Hoi An is often green. From May through August, the weather becomes hotter, making early-morning and late-afternoon sightseeing more comfortable.

If Hoi An is one of the most important destinations on your itinerary, check the Central Vietnam forecast carefully before booking a trip between September and January.

Da Nang Weather

Da Nang generally has a long sunny period followed by a wetter season. Current Vietnam Tourism guidance describes the drier period as roughly January–July, with wetter conditions from August–December, although exact conditions vary from month to month.

February through May is particularly attractive for travelers who want to combine beaches, city sightseeing, Son Tra Peninsula, Marble Mountains and Hoi An.

June and July can be very hot, so beach activities are best scheduled in the morning or late afternoon.

Nha Trang Weather

Nha Trang has one of the more favorable beach climates in Vietnam. Vietnam Tourism describes January–August as generally hot and sunny, with the wetter period concentrated around September–December.

This makes Nha Trang useful for travelers who want a beach destination during periods when other parts of Central Vietnam may have less predictable conditions.

Da Lat Weather

Da Lat is one of Vietnam’s most distinctive weather destinations because of its elevation in the Central Highlands.

Temperatures are cooler than in Ho Chi Minh City and the coastal areas. The dry period is generally November–March, while April–October is wetter.

Rain is common during the afternoon in the wet season, so travelers should schedule outdoor activities such as waterfalls, mountain viewpoints and cycling earlier in the day.

The cooler climate makes Da Lat particularly attractive for travelers who want a break from Vietnam’s tropical heat.

Southern Vietnam Weather

Southern Vietnam remains warm throughout the year. Instead of four strongly defined seasons, the region is generally divided into a dry season and a rainy season.

December–April: generally hot, sunny and relatively dry.

May–November: hot, humid and wetter, with regular rainfall.

The rainy season does not necessarily mean that you should avoid Southern Vietnam. Rain often arrives as a heavy afternoon shower and then clears, leaving the evening available for restaurants, markets and nightlife.

Ho Chi Minh City Weather

Ho Chi Minh City is warm throughout the year, with temperatures commonly around 30°C.

December–April is generally the more comfortable dry period.

May–November is wetter, with afternoon downpours that can be heavy but are often relatively short.

One of the best strategies during the rainy season is to plan museums, cafés, shopping and indoor activities for the afternoon while scheduling outdoor sightseeing earlier in the day.

Mekong Delta Weather

The Mekong Delta is warm and humid throughout the year.

December–April generally offers clearer and drier conditions.

May–November brings more frequent rainfall, but this is also a period when the countryside can be particularly green.

For boat trips, cycling and outdoor activities, mornings are usually preferable because temperatures are lower and the weather is often more comfortable.

If you visit during the rainy season, carry a lightweight rain jacket and protect cameras, phones and other electronics from sudden showers.

Phu Quoc Weather

Phu Quoc has a tropical island climate and is particularly sensitive to rainfall and storms because many activities depend on the sea.

October–June is generally the better period for beaches and island activities.

July–September is wetter, hotter and more vulnerable to storms. Sea conditions can become less favorable, and ferry or boat transportation can be affected.

For a beach holiday, December through March is particularly attractive because conditions are generally warm and dry.

Vietnam Weather by Month

January

January is one of the best months for Southern Vietnam and can be excellent for Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc. Northern Vietnam is cool or cold, while Central Vietnam can be wet, particularly around Hue and Hoi An.

This is a good month for combining Ho Chi Minh City + Mekong Delta + Phu Quoc, but travelers should pack warm layers if visiting Hanoi, Sapa or Ha Giang.

February

February is an excellent transition month. Northern Vietnam begins becoming more comfortable, Central Vietnam is increasingly suitable for sightseeing, and Southern Vietnam remains warm and relatively dry.

It is a particularly strong month for a multi-region itinerary.

March

March is one of the strongest months for traveling through Vietnam. Northern Vietnam becomes more comfortable, Central Vietnam is generally sunny, and Southern Vietnam remains in its dry season.

If you want to visit Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City in one trip, March is one of the months worth considering.

April

April is warm across much of Vietnam. Central Vietnam can have excellent beach weather, while Northern Vietnam becomes increasingly hot.

Sapa and other mountain destinations are attractive because temperatures remain more comfortable than in lowland cities.

May

May can be very hot, particularly in cities and inland areas. However, Central Vietnam can still have excellent beach conditions, and Northern Vietnam can be attractive before the peak summer rainfall.

Travelers who dislike extreme heat should plan outdoor sightseeing early in the morning.

June

June is hot and humid across much of Vietnam. Northern Vietnam enters its wetter summer period, while Central Vietnam can still have strong beach conditions.

This is a good month for Central Vietnam, although temperatures can be high.

July

July is one of the hottest periods in many parts of Vietnam. Central Vietnam can still be suitable for beach vacations, while Northern Vietnam is hot, humid and rainy.

Phu Quoc is entering its wetter period, so it is not the first choice for travelers whose priority is guaranteed beach weather.

August

August remains hot and humid. Central Vietnam can still have good beach weather in some destinations, while Northern Vietnam experiences significant rainfall.

This is a month when flexibility is particularly useful.

September

September is a transition month. Northern Vietnam starts becoming cooler and more comfortable, while Central Vietnam begins entering its wetter period.

Sapa and the northern mountains can become attractive again, while Hoi An and Hue require closer attention to the forecast.

October

October is one of the most interesting months because Northern Vietnam can have excellent weather while Central Vietnam may experience substantial rainfall.

Sapa can be particularly attractive for mountain scenery, while Ha Long Bay may also have favorable conditions.

November

November is often excellent for Hanoi and Northern Vietnam, but Central Vietnam can still experience heavy rain. Southern Vietnam is transitioning toward its drier period.

If you want to visit Hanoi + Ha Long Bay + Ho Chi Minh City, November can be a strong choice.

December

December provides cool weather in the north and warm, sunny conditions in the south. Phu Quoc becomes increasingly attractive for beach travelers.

It is a good month for combining Hanoi + Ho Chi Minh City + Mekong Delta + Phu Quoc, although travelers should not expect tropical beach weather in Northern Vietnam.

Best Time for a North-to-South Vietnam Trip

If you want to travel from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, Central Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City in one itinerary, March and April are among the safest choices for balanced conditions across the country.

September and October can also be excellent for Northern Vietnam and increasingly comfortable Southern Vietnam, but Central Vietnam becomes more weather-sensitive.

November is excellent for the north and increasingly good for the south, but Hoi An and Hue can experience substantial rainfall.

January and February work well for a North-to-South trip if you are comfortable with cooler conditions in Hanoi and the mountains.

What to Pack for Vietnam Weather

Your packing list should change according to the season and destinations.

For summer, pack lightweight breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a lightweight waterproof jacket.

For Northern Vietnam in winter, add a warm jacket, long trousers and additional layers. Sapa and Ha Giang require warmer clothing than Hanoi.

For Central Vietnam during the rainy season, waterproof footwear or sandals and a proper rain jacket are useful.

For Southern Vietnam, lightweight clothing is appropriate throughout the year, but a compact rain jacket is valuable during the wet season.

For mountain destinations, do not rely on the temperature in Hanoi when deciding what to pack. Sapa and Ha Giang can be substantially cooler.

Vietnam Weather and Outdoor Activities

Weather should influence the time of day you schedule activities.

During hot months, start sightseeing early, take a break around midday and return outside in the late afternoon. This is particularly important for Hanoi, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.

For trekking in Sapa or Ha Giang, morning departures are generally more comfortable.

For beaches, early morning and late afternoon offer better temperatures than the middle of the day.

For Ha Long Bay and other boat trips, always check weather conditions because storms can affect departures.

Vietnam Weather and Flights

Bad weather can affect domestic flights, particularly during periods of thunderstorms or tropical storms. Most flights operate normally, but travelers should avoid creating very tight connections.

If your international flight leaves at 11 PM, for example, it is safer to arrive in the departure city earlier in the day rather than completing a long road journey immediately beforehand.

Vietnam Weather and Cruises

Cruises are more weather-sensitive than normal sightseeing. Heavy storms can lead to route changes, shortened itineraries or cancellations.

This is particularly important for Ha Long Bay. If your cruise is canceled because of weather, having a flexible itinerary makes it easier to replace the cruise with another activity rather than losing an entire day.

Is Rainy Season a Bad Time to Visit Vietnam?

No. The answer depends entirely on where you are traveling.

Southern Vietnam can still be very enjoyable during the rainy season because showers are often concentrated in the afternoon. Da Lat has a different rainfall pattern, while Central Vietnam can experience much heavier and more disruptive rain toward the end of the year.

Instead of asking “Is Vietnam rainy?”, ask “Which part of Vietnam is rainy during my travel dates?”

That is the much more useful question.

Vietnam Weather Guide: Final Recommendation

Vietnam can be visited throughout the year, but the ideal itinerary changes with the season. March–May is one of the easiest periods for a broad countrywide itinerary. September–November is excellent for Northern Vietnam but requires more caution in Central Vietnam. December–April is particularly strong for Southern Vietnam and beach destinations such as Phu Quoc.

The best strategy is to choose destinations according to the weather rather than forcing the same itinerary into every month. If you are traveling during the rainy season, keep your schedule flexible, avoid tight connections, carry appropriate rain protection and allow enough time for transportation changes.
